Leading Sustainable Growth in Nkayi

Nkayi Rural District Council is one of the sixty (60) rural district councils in Zimbabwe, located in the North-East of Matabeleland North province. The district is divided into two constituencies, Nkayi North and Nkayi South. The organisation is run by democratically elected councillors and professional council staff.

Nkayi District has an advantageous road network with its offices located 158km to the north of Bulawayo, 96km to the west of Kwekwe and about 300km south-west of Harare. The Fighting Road links the district to the provincial capital, Lupane, which is situated adjacent to the Bulawayo - Victoria Falls highway.

Nkayi RDC has a mesmerising Mbazhe Bird Sanctuary, an ecotourism site with a wide range of bird species and aquatic life. The leafy savannah forests during summer make a breathtaking scenery for those who appreciate nature. The Gwampa Valley forest harbours diversified wildlife, which seasonally migrates to and from Hwange National Park.

Council Committees

Meet the Council Committees

Nkayi Rural District Council operates through a number of specialised committees that assist in policy oversight, strategic planning, governance, and service delivery across the district. These committees are made up of elected councillors who work closely with Council management to ensure efficient administration, accountability, and sustainable community development.

The committees provide leadership and recommendations in key operational areas affecting residents, infrastructure, environmental management, finance, and social welfare within Nkayi District.

Finance Committee
Responsible for financial planning, budgeting, revenue management, and monitoring Council expenditure to ensure transparency and accountability.
Roads, Works and Planning Committee
Oversees infrastructure development, road maintenance, building projects, physical planning, and public works within the district.
Environment Management Committee
Focuses on environmental sustainability, waste management, natural resource conservation, and promoting clean and healthy communities.
Audit Committee
Provides oversight on internal controls, financial compliance, risk management, and governance procedures within Council operations.
Social Services Committee
Addresses community welfare matters, including health, education, social development, and public service delivery initiatives.
Human Resources and Administration Committee
Responsible for human capital management, staff welfare, organisational administration, and institutional governance matters.

Driving Service Delivery Through Leadership

Nkayi RDC operates under a council system, with 30 elected councillors representing the district's wards and 9 councillors for the women's quota. The council is led by the chairperson, Mr Elvis Nkomo, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who oversees the implementation of policies and development projects. The current CEO is Mr. Silibele Mpofu. The Nkayi Rural District Council is led by a dedicated team committed to serving the community and driving local development.
